The custom of finding chocolates on hotel room pillows started in 1950 when Cary Grant stayed at The Reberts Mayfair in St. Louis. He left a trail of chocolates from living room to the bed to impress a lady. The hotel later follows his acts and put chocolates on guests pillows. The trend then spread among other hotels.

The Mayfair's manager heard about the chocolate gambit, likely because a hotel staffer had to procure the chocolates and lay them out. The manager liked the idea so much that he made a chocolate on the pillow upon arrival one of the hotel's many standard amenities.

Hundreds of other hotels borrowed the idea, which eventually turned into “a chocolate on the pillow” during turndown service. Different hotels have a different take on the tradition. Some still give chocolate, although some places give mints instead (or an Andes Candy kind of thing that’s both chocolate and mint).

Impressed with this thoughtful, luxurious detail, the hotel manger decided that all guests should be greeted with a pleasant surprise that would make them feel appreciated, and started putting chocolates on the pillows in all of his rooms. The gesture began a trend that was picked up by hotels all over the world, and still continues today!

The hotelier decided to put it someplace conspicuous - on the person’s pillow - either since people like chocolate or to help advertise the chocolate. The customers liked this particular juxtaposition. The customers talked about it and other hoteliers picked it up too.

Guests have come to expect the small piece of chocolate, the mint, or some other form of sweet pillow treat such as a cookie bite at any nice hotel throughout the United States, and even many hotels worldwide.
