I've ALWAYS been asked for my passport (and those of my husband and kids, if they're with us) upon check-in at hotels in Mexico and I believe they are supposed to check ID (as per a regular poster on these boards who owns/runs a hotel). However, this is Mexico and we all know that the application of the rules is somewhat random at best.
