Cardholders typically protect their credit cards in an enclosed place such as a wallet, but hotel key cards are often carried in a person's pocket next to their cell phone. “The mag stripe is often exposed to magnetic fields that can cause the encoding to degrade or erase,” Hermanson says.

“The number one issue was cards being demagnetized by being carried next to a cell phone or set on a TV in a hotel room,” Hermanson says. “Anything with an electromagnetic field transmitting from it can cause a mag stripe to demagnetize.” Often, however, the problem is not really with the mag stripe material.

If you manage to actually erase a key with your cell phone overnight, please tell us about it! The next time your hotel clerk says you erased your key with your cell phone, ask to see the manager. Tell them you want a free night for being locked out, because their employee failed to program your key correctly for all your entire reservation.

One other thing to be aware of is that hotel keys are often time-encoded at the time the key is made, so that if you extend your stay, the keys may deactivate if they are not remade when you extend. Also, making new room keys can, in certain situations, deactivate the old room keys.

As bad as this may sound, the primary (in my personal experience at least) way that keys get deactivated is through the information on the key card being damaged or corrupted. This happens when the key is exposed to a magnet or Electromagnetic radiation.

Myth two: credit cards demagnetizing hotel key cards. When Cunningham’s key cards ceased to work and he told the hotel attendant that he did not have the card next to his cell phone, the attendant asked whether he had the card in his wallet next to his credit cards.

next the keys have to be cleaned with a soft cloth if recycled by the hotel. this is because build up of grease and dust transfers onto the magnetic head resulting in a drop in performance. All other causes mentioned do not contribute to more than 2 percent of the complaints.

I too have worked at a hotel front desk, and even when our system was working properly* I had to issue new keys to about 10% of our guests, if memory serves. Cell phones and magnetic clasps are surefire ways of discharging them, but it could be something as simple as the clothes you wear most of the time happen to build up a larger than average amount of static electricity.

Electronic Hotel Key Cards - Why they often stop working. I've read a lot on the boards, especially on the hotel reviews, about people having trouble with their key cards because they stop working. I found out on my cruise last year - because my card kept having to be reprogrammed - that the culprit is often a woman's purse that has a magnetic ...

As far as the remote entry fob is concerned, there is virtually no chance that your phone could damage it either. Now all of the above being said, since strange things can and do happen, there are no guarantees. But I truly believe you can safely co-mingle your wallet, key fob and mobile phone with no worries. I hope this helps, Cam.
