As for how the Bibles end up in the hotel rooms, the Gideons will ceremoniously present a Bible to a hotel manager upon the opening of a new hotel. They then provide more than enough Bibles for each hotel room, to be distributed by the hotel staff.

Why Are There Bibles in Hotel Rooms? Over the years, the Gideons expanded into a legitimate organization. Since the group targeted businessmen, many of the men who were frequently travelling to work came to wonder how they could do more to further the Gideons’ goal of doing God’s work through the practice of faith, humility and obedience while on the road.

There has been Bibles in hotel rooms for at least 75 years. I always thought it was for lonely businessmen away from the family. The Bible brings comfort. People who study the Bible know there is comfort found in the Bible.

The IBS provided Bibles to Civil War soldiers, and, according to communications coordinator Stephanie Nelson, started putting Bibles in hotels in 1823 — more than 75 years before the Gideons started their ministry.
