Is the Shining based on a real hotel? The fictional hotel in “The Shining” is called the Overlook, and the Stanley Hotel is not the only real-life hostelry to claim ties to the movie. The Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon was used for some exterior shots, though the hotel’s website explains that it lacks a hedge maze.

The Shining, was inspired by these events and the overall experience of being secluded in the grand resort hotel alone. The Stanley appeared in the 1990s King-sanctioned made-for-TV series version, as he wasn't a fan of Stanley Kubrick's atmosphere-heavy, plot-light take on his material.
